Studio 1 reissues

Postby Natty Matti » Wed Nov 05, 2014 12:03 pm

With the recent(-ish) reissues of Coxsone's output on original stampers, what are your favourites? (Not counting the excellent Dub Store series with the dubplate cuts and whatnot) I might have missed some crucial tracks as they always seem to come in big bundles... Anyway, here's a few of my favs to get the ball rolling:

King Rocky - You were wrong
Jennifer Lara - Natural Misty
I Teens - Story of love
Lloyd Robinson - It Deep
Fabian Cooke - Mother & Child
Ethiopians - The Prophet
The Tonettes - I'll Give It To You
Dynamic Four - Let's Make Love
Larry Marshall - I've Got to Make It
Carlton & The Shoes - Love Is All
Keith Wilson - God I God I Say
Cecille Campbell - Whisper To Me (This might be a boot though... or Japanese?)
Lloyd Forest - Where Its At
Anthony Rocky Ellis - Double Minded Man
Glen Miller - Love & Understanding
Don Drummond - Cleopatra
Im & The Sound Dimension - guess what
Delroy Williams - Let Them Say
Ras Michael - Good People
The Supertones - Trust No Shadow b/w The Three Tops - Man of Chances
Sound Dimension - Lover's Serenade

so, any suggestions to what I might have missed? :D

How are these quality-wise? Original stampers makes me worried when it comes to Studio One. :)

Most of these sounds excellent with rich, heavy sound not like most studio 1 re's that I bought in the 90's. A few of course with snap, crackle & pop but nothing that overpowers the music imho

Freddy McKay - I'm A Free Man

Couple of my favourites. Quality is really good on these but I know some of the others have been less so.

I agree with Natty man, rahther have the original stamper's than the res....

if people are avid Studio 1 collectors anyhow will know most originals 7s have been played to death anyhow, with that classic

"Studio 1 Sound" so i welcome the new reisues bring then on!!

Some great selections there Matti. From your list I've also picked up the Lloyd Robinson, Keith Wilson, Lloyd Forrest, and Anthony Rocky Ellis, singles and enjoy them a lot.

I've also picked up the following which are all very nice too:

Albert Tomlinson - Don't Wait Around
Willows - Send Another Moses
Viceroys - Slogan on the Wall
Jay Tees - Forward to Jah
Josephine Bryan - What Could I do Without Jah
Judah Eskander Tafari - Rastafari Tell You

As for the sound quality (Kalcidis!) it is pretty variable across the whole recent repress program. Almost all of them have some level of sound quality issues (none of them have that "clean from tape" sound), but some are much better than others. I've listened to samples of most of them so I think I've avoided the worst - most of the ones above are fairly strong.

Anyone wanna recommend some studio ones to check out from someone who doesn't know a ton of the releases. Some of it is too mongy for my liking but then when it's good it's amazing.

I like tunes like...

Winston Francis - going to zion
Lloyd forrest where it's at
L crosdale - set me free
Prince lincoln - daughters of zion
Antony ellis double minded man.
Otis gayle - what love won't do

Any recommendations based on tht list ? Would love to expand my knowledge of studio one killers

On a more ska tip, some of the Dub Store 7" reissues from Japan haven been rocking too. My favourites are these 2 instrumentals:

Freedom Sounds - Soul Brothers
Last Call - Don Drummond

@message_music - check for some of the releases on daniel's list - some great roots on there - esp. The Viceroys & The Jaytees
