Yes, the Abyssinnians are a definite contender.
I'm not saying that they didn't record some brilliant tunes but I'm not a big fan of Culture, the Wailing Souls or Israel Vibration. I think it's because I loved Burning Spear so Culture sounded like an imitator at the time and I don't like the lead vocals of the other groups which sound dull at times. However, I am more than happy to be proved wrong if anyone has any recommendations?

The Wailers......phenomenal songs, three unique singing styles
The Heptones.......pure Studio One bliss
Burning Spear......including them because of how great their early output was, but I've always heard them as two singers backing Winston Rodney as opposed to three equal parts.

So many great voices out of JA, it's a tough question, so different days may yield different results to your question RG.

Cultural Roots & Wailing Souls are personal favorites along with Heptones... but it is difficult to limit it to one alone. (Hate those show's that try and make out a top ten out of anything; detrimental and limiting to any subject)

I guess you'd need a little more justification in naming one alone. Versatility and consistency would be good qualities, along with endurance. Also, without going too off track... it's a shame there aren't many Female groups that come to mind in the same light.

1. MIGHTY DIAMONDS
the original group still intact, fantastic records their entire career.

2. WAILING SOULS
like the Diamonds, an entire career of awesome records.

3. HEPTONES
all eras/iterations of the group have amazing output.

3. CULTURAL ROOTS
unheralded in a 'popular' reggae context but their output is so high quality. amazing group.

4. ABYSSINIANS
only a couple classic records, but what records!

5. MIGHTY ABIDJANS / FASHIONEERS
only made a handful of records but WHAT RECORDS! masterful.

hon. mention to: Wailers (hard to see them as a group unfortunately), Gaylads, Congos, Gladiators

For me it has to be the Twinkle Brothers. So much incredible material and they still release awesome stuff to this date. Norman Grant is a roots man powerhouse.

What non-male reggae groups are there? I can only think of like two UK (Abacush and Mwanamke Mwafrika) and one JA (if the I-threes count).
