Spring Reverb Tanks

Postby firuzaga » Wed Apr 09, 2014 2:54 pm

Greetings,

We will start building a custom spring reverb with an engineer and we need to choose the right Spring Reverb Tanks for a 1U rack unit.

What I've chosen was this http://www.tubesandmore.com/products/P-RK-4AB3C1B, it has a long decay but 2 springs. It should fit a rack, (16,75'')

But I was confused. Long Decay is good for a deep long reverb effect but what we need is the thundering spring effect. So do you think a tank with a medium decay but 3 springs will do bettter? Or should we stick to the long decay / 2 springs? Anyone?

We also decided not to put EQ on it, we'll handle it on the mixer. Gain, Tone and a kick pad for shake effect will do I guess?

My second question is, the tank we chose has RCA inputs and outputs so that you can use it alone. Will it be effective if we connect it to a send and return to an individual mono channel? Can we create the boingy tone with the feedback when we turn on the sends of the channel to itself? And when we touch the tank a little it should make the rattling thunder sound I guess.. Is it correct? If it costs a lot, we're considering to use it that way.

Thanks for your help

A spring reverb tank needs a driver in order to get good level. So only hooking up the tank isn't the right way.
It will work but you have to drive the input very hard and get gain on the mixer way up which will result in loads of hiss.

The accutronics tanks are good. The boingy tone you won't get from feedbacking on the desk. That'll give you a another kinda tone which isn't always very pleasant. The boing tone you'll get from driving the input the right way.

When you build a driver for it you have to see if the tank has the right impedance for your driver.
