NICE D.J. SHOWCASE LPs

Postby pampasjudas » Sat Dec 28, 2013 4:47 pm

hello everybody!
first of all, all my best wishes for the new year! may it bring loads of wax to us all! :D

i have been playing and enjoying the Ranking Dillinger "showcase" album on Clocktower (in spite of the wrong tracklisting and the so-and-so sound), so i thought of asking you guys for tips about any other D.J. inna-disco-style/showcase album worth a listen.
any good ones you feel like suggesting?

thanks in advance and all best wishes again!!!

you are very welcome. i particularly like "special request" - apparantly fari's last studio session before he passed away. a tribute to reggae music.

It's a fairly rare LP, but Presenting Ranking Trevor is a good one

Kojak and Liza's Showcase LP is also worth checking.

General Smilie & Papa Michigan, RUB A DUB STYLE (Studio One)

And a couple that aren't really "Showcase" albums in that the dubs don't directly follow the deejay tracks but are collected on the other side:

Big Youth, DREADLOCKS DEAD (TR International)
Lone Ranger, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF DUB (Studio One)

wow, thank you all for your kindest messages!

in my original post i mentioned the Ranking Dillinger "In a Disco Style" album, released by Clocktower: the copy i own is rotten, sound-wise, and i saw that there's a Attack-issued Lp around titlled "Dillinger at King Tubby's", featuring more or less the same material.
any of you familiar with this particular LP?
http://www.discogs.com/Dillinger-At-Kin ... ter/258471
is its sound good, or at least better than in the Clocktower release?

thanx!!!

Hi Pampas,

I can't speak of the Attack reissue, but I have the same set issued on the Magnum label as Talkin' Blues, and the sound quality is much crisper than the Clocktower...

thanks a lot Ranchie!
wow, isn't that confusing?!? the same tracks featured on so many different releases...
i'm annoyed with myself, now, since the shop where i bought the Clocktower version also had Talkin' Blues. apparently i made the wrong choice!!! :x

Mad Professor Captures Pato Banton
Starkey Banton - Powers Youth

the Starkey Banton "Powers Youth" is a real gem! i really like the dub mixes! some of the best coming out of the UK IMHO! Chris Lane aka Dub Organiser did some amazing work! i spent quite some dunza on the 10" "I & I saw them coming". the dubs sound really close to Bunny Lee/King Tubby's transfered to the 90's. wicked!

Agreed Capullo. Powers Youth was released in 1997 I think but I didn't even hear of it until years later probably due to a lack of promotion. I would recommend this LP to anyone who hasn't already got it. As well as the tough rhythms, there are some serious and very clever lyrics.

I know that some people giggle at the mention of Pato Banton, probaly due to "Hello Tosh" and his other commercial hits, but "Mad Professor Captures Pato Banton" is another gem. Intelligent lyrics overs tough roots rhythms.
