Vocalists whose voices have changed & become unregognizable

Postby Roman » Wed Oct 23, 2013 2:06 am

Some vocalists' voices have changed during their musical careers / lifes and become almost completely unrecognizable.

Like in this case for instance:

Dillinger, 1976: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pcak15k8Etg
Dillinger, 2001: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZMUJL9kOZI

Russian reggae singer

Oldy, 1995: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlcTXivLr9M
Oldy, 2010: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cA_kSnEeyk

Please post more examples without any negative additional comments.
I don't want any bad vibes, rumours, discussions about people's health, their personal lifes etc here. Remember that change isn't necessarily a negative thing.

I am also totally uninterested in facts - only in exapmles such as in the one above. Let's keep it simple & respectful

Clever Question,

I can't think of any names off hand, guess some people like to reinvent themselves though, some of the old style of vocal phrasing & lyrics can sound dated in this time, perhaps some people just want to sound new, yeah if it works change can be good.

That 2005 link from Dillinger sounds heavily edited in the studio and there is another artist on vocal as well (ranking Joe?).

Dillinger live in 1979:

Michael Rose's voice has changed for the worse. It's no longer nasal, and very throaty. I found it very hard to listen to when he performed with the TAXI Gang in Garance and Paris last Summer.

I would like to add Jacob Miller & Dennis Brown - both artists stated to sing @ a very early age when their voices were still sounding childlike

+ Michael Jackson

I know what you mean but the vox still sound natural.

Only Steve Jah Warrior knows - it's his productions from the early 2000s.

To be honest I don't hear Ranking Joe in that one at all - I hear the same person (Dillinger) deejaying all the way through.

guillaumebougard: I slightly disagree with you - the current condition of his voice is great:

1984: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fh97BUZDvDg

Here's a wicked tune by M.R. from 2005 - slightly different style I must say:

Even non-reggae singers are welcome to this thread.

Like this man:

1980: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDFeZb2f9wg
1987: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9pR0Ot00Q0
1991: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNiKFoiTpW0
1993: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwbpO0pmAKk

This guy could sound like 4 different people. At least 4. Really

There's nobody else but Dillinger on the track I produced and no editing of the vocal either. For me the reason singers usually change with the passing of time is the same as why a sportsman at the end of their career aren't as good as when they were younger - just like a sportsmans muscles/energy/fitness levels etc deteriorate, so does a singers vocal chords. The way they can sing when they're 21 is hard to maintain when they're 53, with very few exceptions...

The huge quantities of herbs some of them smoke might have something to do with it as well!
