What's The Most You've Spent on a Record?

Postby Ranking Glasses » Mon Sep 23, 2013 11:58 am

What's the most money you've paid for 1 record and what was it ? (Just make sure your partner doesn't see your response!)

If my memory serves me right, the most expensive record I bought was Benie Man - Over The Sea (Jah Observers 12"), £72.

I probably wouldn't pay that much for it today. I've spent close to £70 on some hard to find records a few times in the past but I hardly go over £40 now. I am pretty confident now that you can find any record for a sensible price, eventually... but when you're starting a record collection, ebay is a fascinating and dangerous world! lol

This one set me back £100. But I chocked myself with what I paid...

Maximum bids I've made were around 100-120 £ and were spent on
- Errol Dunkley-Jah Stitch Hard: Luck Story-To Hell and Forward (Aries 12")
- Naggo Moris: Jah Guide (Joe Gibbs 12")
- The Mighty Threes: MT Dub (April LP)

Marmalade: Giuchie, Giuchie, ya ya dada (Hey hey hey) Mocha Chocalata ya ya (Oh yeah) give us some names on what you bought! :)

Shadrach: Wouldn't have minded that Mighty Threes Dub LP. But I bought the reissue some years ago so it will have to suffice.

For me it was a no brainer given the fact I'd just picked up the vocal LP too (for a 'reasonable' £70)...

The most I've ever spent on a record is £100 for Wes Brooks - Lay Down Your Arms.
It went for over £150 on e-Bay the other day so I can always sell mine if I fall on hard times!

Knowing my luck it will be reissued soon. It happened to me with Paul Sinclair's "Naturalization" and Fabians "Destiny". Spent big money on them and they were both re-issued with a couple of weeks!

For a single record.. $40 USD for a pristine copy of Lord Lebby's Ethiopia on a Kalypso 78. I mostly buy in large lots... Several hundred $ for several hundred records!

Making many high value swappings these days but one of the most expensive i actually paid for is "Sidney Rogers -I dont want to end up in slavery again" which was something about 120 quid.

Went for less few times but really needed to get it and i love it to the max everytime i put it on...especially the extended melodica version!

I always figure (and it's been my experience) that after a few weeks I forget what I paid, the bank balance has gone back up - and i've a great tune to enjoy 8)

£27, for Rupie Edwards-Dub Basket on Cactus.
I've bid a bit more on a record a few times (up to £40 max, I believe), but was outbid in those cases.
Still, I think I've managed to build up a nice collection over the years, so I'm a strong believer in the "patience is the key" approach :D
