New Aba Shanti sessions

Postby richmrpa » Mon May 13, 2013 10:49 am

WIcked little session last night at the Village Underground in Shorditch (9-2am). Aba was on top form.

He was saying that these will be regular sessions at this venue. The crowd was pretty good despite zero publicity in the usual places.

Anyway, one to keep an eye out for.

No not really. There were probably about 150 people there, 10% trendies.

Excellent news - in the 80's it was whities, then in the 90's it was white crusties, followed closely by Euro-Crusties and/or crusties on drugs. Now it is hipsters. :D

lol ringo i had the same thought and started to write a post but got lost. to me it feels pretty weird (to say the least) to distinguish a category of people om others....like "10% of this", man what does it mean? just another discrimination imo and we dont need that do we?
Peace

quite right robin, shouldnt discriminate in any way - to explain ive been out in shoreditch before and left nights early because of a certain atmosphere that disrespects the music, so was really asking was the crowd there into it for real or just for a pose.

In what way do you think things have changed? I don't see any change at all. Dances have always been full of people enjoying themselves in various ways, thats the point for many people. Reducing a reggae night to a religious experience might be applicable to a devout rasta but most people going out to sound system have no such interest and never have.

I think posing has always been a part of dancehall culture, and has been widely celebrated as such.

no harm but u quote me wrongly ollie/monko. anyway, dont want to go into an argument. we had the same kind of talk when i was skateboarding 8) posing or not, like one is legit and one is not lol..

but thx to message_music for confirming aba brings a stack in. thats now 2 regular heavyweight sessions on sundays in hackney if im correct (the other being channel one in vibe bar) so thats good news. i wish i had never leave this place

What an hilarious thread - thank you so very much people.

I had this image of a bunch of people in designer ear protection! Aba, if you are reading this, I love some of your work but reckon it's time to turn the volume down when windows are breaking Quality beats quantity every time.

As a youth I always found it really disappointing when I tried to be trendy - as no one recognised me as that  i was diagnosed with a terrible case of status anxiety (I don't think). But if anyone's idea of style is copying what a bunch of (expletive deleted) fashion designers say is the "next big thing", and keep the capitalist machine turning each season, so be it...

The first sign of maturity is simply being yourself, because you are guaranteed to find some people liking you and others not no matter how you look!

The really important thing inna session is good behaviour. Treat everyone like you want to be treated yourself... and dance your heart out :D

Peace

Fair points all round.. but I think, sometimes, what is meant when people enquire as to the crowd, it has to do with the venue, as in this case.. and also since Aba was playing on his own.. whether it brought out some of the older crowd. Dances have changed, they always have.. though some things generally stay the same. The older followers knew their music and sounds better, not that they made up the whole of the crowd.. but I don't see so many of them around any more... and sounds don't play in the way they used.. not saying they should. Numbers through the door and bums on seats as they say, promoters have to work on that basis, so I'm just adding my couple of pence worth...

Have to agree with you Simeon. Dances keep evolving (they have to or you lose your audience). You always need to maintain a mix of new faces getting into the scene and old stalwarts, glad that Aba has maintained this over the years.
