Made In The UK

Postby underated » Wed Apr 17, 2013 1:42 pm

Hello,

I was just thinking about classic tracks made in the UK.
When i use the word 'classic' I'm thinking about tracks that get versioned time & time again, classic drum & bass riddims.

I know their must be a lot, just can't think of many just now.
Aswad's 'Love Fire' comes to mind, the moog sounding bass line is easily remembered.

So where are all those British standards that can stand toe to toe with JA productions like Studio 1 & the like.

Untold classic roots killers though if your definition is based on the number of times the riddims been versioned then obviously nothing like stalag, real rock etc
More Uk productions than you think, for example Desmond Dekkers fu man chu was a Uk production recently re licked. Warrior charge has probably had a few outings. Plenty of others from the likes of Lesly Ceasar, Dennis Harris, Dennis Bovell, Ijahman Levi etc etc

Also there was some discussion about Kunta Kinte. If I'm not mistaken a lot of knowledge people have denied it being the Revolutionaries but rather an UK outfit. That rhythm has been done over a proper amount of times.

I seem to remember a Steel Pulse tune being sampled by Donovan Germain sometime in the mid-1990s, with cuts from Buju Banton ("Bad Boys"), Wayne Wonder ("Emptiness") and Dean Fraser ("Fulfilment").

UB40's All I Want To Do

What about the many Bob Marley & The Wailers recordings done totally or partially in the UK?
Jamming, Exodus, Waiting In Vain,etc...
or Barrington Levy's Here I come ?
Louisa Marks' 6 Sixth Street?
Was Steel Pulse's Handsworth Revolution relicked in Jamaica?

"Handsworth Revolution" was relicked in New York by Bullwackie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYk_qjFz9pw
It's easier for a camel, to go through a needle's eye, than for a version to die, believe me !

although maybe not versioned time & time again, "warrior stance" by dread&fred is what id call a uk classic in its genre.

Just remembered "Greedy Bug" by Levi Roots. I don't know whether other producers ever latched onto this wicked, wicked rhythm, but there was an album's worth of cuts on his Sound Box label from the likes of Luciano, Yami Bolo, Anthony B and Mikey General.

That´s Handsworth Revolution. Wicked relick for sure.

Fattis used UB40s All I Want To Do for Beres Hammonds Emptiness Inside. Perhaps there were other cuts?
