Terrible news. Captain Barkey was a quite good deejay even though he was marred in my eyes as a gun talk deejay. Songs such as »Gun« and »Sound A Di Gun« no matter how good they are still carry a very negative message (or at least celebrate a negative culture). There's a part in particular from his song »Gun« (Steely & Cleevy 12" ... IIRC) that I often come to think about:

»As a teeny weeny beenie likkle yute
my main ambition was to learn how fe shoot
get me slingshot amd shoot through a ripe bread fruit
ah so dem get fi know seh I am a dangerous yute

He wasn't all gun talk. His best tune , of those I've heard at least, was a killer conscious tune called Bawl Head Rasta. Which I would like to find a copy of, actually.

Five years later I finally uploaded to YouTube the video of Bawl Head Rasta, an unusually conscious tune from him which shows he was more than just a guns and girls DJ, maybe following the '94 roots and culture trend. Check it out!

Toughest riddim I ever heard the Capn on was 'Gun' on Steely & Cleavie:

Any other vocals on this one?

Gregory Isaacs - Miss Propaganda. No dub on either. Could have made a bad 12" (instead of two separate that have no dub).

Edit: I went to youtube to listen to the Gregory tune so I don't accidentally give the wrong title. Apparently there is a 12" release (mine is on yellow S&C label) which has a dub. Cool.

His passing was five years ago. The thread just popped up because Marko posted the tune he had mentioned earlier (and a nice one at that, Marko, thanks for sharing by the way).

Actually I was the one who reopened this because after being too lazy to bother for about 5 years, I finally created a YouTube channel to upload this track. Now I'm realizing I actually have a fair amount of 7" from roughly 90-93 era that are not online. (I used to order a lot of 7" from Charlie Morgan/Outernational around that time) And I'll be gradually putting them online if they aren't there already. Feel free to check it out if you like that sort of thing.

I personally think the early 90's are underrated but I was in my early 20's at the time so it's kind of my jam.

Yes, flashman. My bad. The early to mid 90's seems to be getting some second breath recently. Noticed a lot of selectors going through their 90's boxes for their selections recently. I'm intrigued on how linear the focus is. From the early to mid-80's the hype became all the digistuff and now we're approaching the 90's again. I'm guessing that in 5 years we'll have the 90's bobo era being popular again. :D
