Lee Scratch Perry and his smart tactics

Postby capullo » Mon Oct 04, 2010 9:04 pm

from "People Funny Boy" by David Katz

Max Romeo remembers certain incidents that took place as Perry struggled to shake off the predatory idlers who congregated daily at his studio. "He had a Rastafarian church he started with a bunch of dreads; I don't know what happened, but these dreads fall out of grace, so he wanted to keep them off him. He put a pound of pork on his antennae and rode around town until it rotted and maggots were falling from it, claiming that he don't want no Rasta round him because Rasta come give his kids lice; after he put the pork on the antennae, the dreads was stil coming, so he wrote on his car back, "I'm a batty man". That's when the dreads run in all different directions! (...)

Don't forget Joe Meek to complete the trilogy of mad record producer svengali figures.

Reggae history would sure be a lot more boring without anecdotes of LP's mad antics, not to mention the unique sounds and productions.

Whatever the case, you do get the sense his whole Black Ark operation must have become a real drag to let it fizzle in the way he did, toss stuff in the latrine, burn the place down & then move away to the ice and snow of Switzerland.

Am sure you are right choco, but surely they should give spector a sheriffs badge and a large hand gun and send him on his way.

They all had a unique sonic vision

Lee Perry,
Worked with some people like Bob Marley,
Burned his studio, moved to Switzerland

Image

Phil Spector,
Worked with some people like the Beatles & Ronettes.
Was known to shoot his gun in the studio.
Semi-retired to 'castle', shot female companion in face. Now in jail.

Image

Joe Meek
Worked with people like Petula Clark & Gene Vincent.
Shoots landlady & himself dead with borrowed shotgun.

Hardly.

"Look, I'm surrounded by people with wasted brain. And when I send out my beam, my scannin' beam, and go into their wasted brain and see no part of the wasted brain that I require, I'm bored! But when I scan the brain and see brain that are not wasted, brain that can be put to work or put to use to bring forward a creation, I would be really interested in it. Then I won't be bored."
