producers: chronology and grouping...

Postby benja » Tue Dec 07, 2004 5:06 am

I'm reorganizing some of the booklets that I keep discs in. I'm trying to group the discs roughly by producer and then by era/time. I know many producers went over a broad period of time, so I'm trying to roughly arrange them in some sort of order based on their prime or when they first caught their stride.

What kind of a sequence would you put these producers in?

Derrick Harriot
Rupie Edwards
Clancy Eccles
Bunny Lee (early stuff, not King Tubby era.)
Leslie Kong
Lloyd Daley
Sonia Pottinger
Harry J
Duke Reid

(Coxsone has his own booklet.)

May be you should check the Rough Guide again for chronology, Benja?

Out of my head I would say:
Duke Reid
Leslie Kong
Lloyd Daley
Harry J
Sonia Pottinger
Rupie Edwards
Clancy Eccles
Bunny Lee (early stuff, not King Tubby era.)
Derrick Harriott

I guess I wasn't sure if Rough Guide really did them in a chronology or other grouping.

It's impossible to put them in the right order in any other way than this one:

Daley, Lloyd
Eccles, Clancy
Edwards, Rupie
Harriott, Derrick
J(ohnson), Harry
Kong, Leslie
Lee, Bunny
Pottinger, Sonia
Reid, Duke

I wasn't sarcastic. I'm a very serious man.
If you want a proper listing then it should alphabetical. If you want precision. Alphabet equals precision. Period.

Whether they should be sorted by "first appearance" or "prime time" would be tougher to sort out. If by appearance Duke Reid I guess should be first. Rupie Edwards and Harry J last. Lloyd Daley and Derrick Harriott were some of very first producers in the early days but their prime time was much later. And so on and so on. Why don't you just make one of your own. It would be as good as anyone's proposition.
I wouldn't really want put them in any order but alphabetical. The Alphabet is the key. No arguing and fighting over petty details, just divine Wisdom and Understanding through the ancient Greek Alpha Beta.
