Shaka vs Quaker City '79 part 2

Postby Lionofjudah » Mon Dec 06, 2004 8:27 pm

Also interested in the dub Shaka's playing in the middle of the first half. He's saying "One from the originator". The only vocals I can hear sounds like "..In the ghetto..". Wicked riddim.. Any ideas?

Thanks guys.
But That's not the tune I'm after. I know he played The Roman Stewart tune, or maybe it was Quaker City. If you have the session it's the tune after Prince Alla - Daniel..

I know the tune you're talking about but I don't know what it is. Sounds like a UK tune to me, possibly dubplate. Russ if you've heard the tape maybe you know?

It sounds UK to me too. But Shaka says "One from the originator". That to me is King Tubbys. But maybe he's talking about someone else. I know about a dubplate by a guy called Noel Zebelon or something like that. The plate is called "In a de ghetto". Maybe that's the one, but I think that's a mid 80s production or even later. Thanks anyway.

i only have one session with shaka / quaker city on tape and i can`t seem to find it right now, so can`t help, unless someone can put up a sample of the tune for me to hear....

doubt very much its any noel zebulon tune, don`t think he was productive till back end of 80`s, at least thats when shaka started running his tunes...

Lionofjudah - yes it's definitely not a tubbys tune even tho from the way Shaka introduces it you'd think that's what he's talking about.... And yes Russ I'm sure it's not Noel Zebulon either due to it being far too early. Altho the tape says 1979 on the cover, it features Twinkles "Rasta Pon Top" which wasn't released till 1981 so I think the session could well be later than 79 & the tune could be from any UK band active during that time....

don`t know the track, think i have another session somewhere were he plays it....my opinion: its not a Pablo tune ! i know the tinkling glockenspiel is pabloesque (like No Entry) but the heavy pik guitar don`t resemble pablo`s style, to me anyways....can`t exactly make out what he says but i think it not a reference to the tune or artist thereof but instead some invokation either to the gathered bredren or to some special guest/s in the dance, done in his own inimitable style, its something he`s been heard to do.... obviously its a dubplate, probably never released in any form, and my feeling is its a uk production...just another one away dub outta his cocoa basket !

Thanks one and all for your best efforts. No doubt it's a dubplate. I'm thinking maybe mixed by Dennis Bovell. Did some wicked plates for Shaka like for exemple 'The African'.
