Runaway Girl - U-Roy

Postby 6anbatte » Mon Aug 14, 2006 1:00 pm

Hi

Does anyone know the original vocal track U-Roy toasts over on 'Runaway Girl'? (From 'Dread In A Babylon').

Thanks.

Thanks Supersonics.

Sorry, I probably didn't make myself clear. It's the track that he is actually singing over on the 'Dread In A Babylon' album that I am interested in.

I don't have the U-Roy track, so I don't know if this is the original, but the SmokeyRoom site lists 'Ranking Joe - Woman of Sumeria' as another version.

Hi steve0

Thanks for that, but I have been assured that it isn't that track. It's an absolutely gorgeous vocal track. I assume Ranking Joe's style isn't like that.

Hi ephteeay

Looks good though!

Well, I can see from your pic of the label that it's produced and arranged by Tony Robinson as is the U-Roy track so I assume that it is exactly the backing track!

Hi supersonics

Funnily enough someone else said that and I have been trying to look into this further with absolutely no joy at all.
I know it's Barrington's vocals on, for example 'African Message', but keep drawing a blank on 'Runaway Girl'.

I have listened and tried to compare, but am not 100% sure. I have searched through his album and song listings, but from what I have found he doesn't appear to have performed that song.

I will take another look down this avenue.

Thanks for that download ephteeay. I've just done a bit of searching and found a web page where someone refers to the original vocal as being the Barrington Spence cut: http://www.normanjay.com/cboard/printerversion.asp?cbid=1&tid=7235

...RUNAWAY GIRL - U.Roy (I love Barrington Spence's singing on this - Groovemaster, Tony Robinson on the case)...

Hi steve0

You star!!! Excellent. Thank you. His vocals are absolutely superb on this track.

Actually, I was really surprised to read (whilst investigating) that he had a relatively unsuccesssful career. What a voice.

Hi 6anbatte, i'm pretty sure it's Barrington Spence, check the link below for a snippet of 'Mr Business Man', the voice certainly has a resemblance on U Roy's 'Runaway Girl'.

Hi supersonics

Thank you. Yes, it's definitely him. Steve0 just posted the following link;

http://www.reggaeid.co.uk/riddims.php?r ... her%20Girl

Thanks for the Mr Businessman link! Just played it and I am going to have to buy that and try track down 'Just Another Girl' as well.

Really appreciate the input!

Actually, if anyone sees it in their travels can they give me a shout?

Spence did an album back in the day called, if I remember correctly, Tears On My Pillow, featuring a cover of the syrupy title track, but I can't remember if Just Another Girl was on it, but he was a Ken Boothe carbon by trade. He also cut the awesome Don't Touch I Locks for Bunny Lee / Yabby U, issued on a Vivian Jackson or Prophets 7" in 1975 and never seen again. It's the original piece to the similarly titled opening track on I Roy's Crisis Time.
