Reggae and Midem

Postby Reggaemusicstore » Mon Jan 24, 2005 2:09 pm

This week Midem, the annual music biz trade fair is taking place in Cannes, south of France. Traditionally it's the place where the movers & shakers of the music biz meet to make deals, be it licensing, distribution, marketing etc. Legend has it that most of the deals are done in the bar after midnight. A glance at the midem website shows there are no exhibitors at all from Jamaica, and just 5 participants, (meaning companies who attend the event but don't exhibit), of whom only one was recogniseable to me, Alvin Ranglins GG's Records.

From the UK, there are no reggae exhibitors and just 2 participants, Greensleeves & Ariwa. VP are the sole reggae exhibitors from the USA with Easy Star the only other US reggae participant.

None of this is surprising given the prohibitive cost of flying out to Cannes for a week, staying in hotels, wining & dining record execs etc. But it should go a long way towards explaining why reggae is likely to remain in the underground and will always have difficulty breaking out to a higher commercial level.....
