...COMPACT DISCS ! just got back to the yard with a parcel of six fresh discs of Hiphop (care of a good friend who compiles em for me in return for reggae comps). first disc skips on every f**kin track, and the tunes thereon are haaaard, tried cleaning it etc but to no avail. thankfully the remaining discs are fine.

and to think one of the early selling points of the CD over vinyl was the eradication of skips, scratches etc...me arse !!!

respect

I've had that problem before, but have solved it by copying the CD onto a computer and burning it onto another blank CD. I think stereos can sometimes just take a dislike to certain CDRs.

It's worth a try anyway...

...I just picked up a couple of dirt cheap CD's - Jill Scott for 75p and the 50 Cent double set for £2.99. These things look as if someone has been rollerblading on them or something - soo many scratches and marks. But the CD player doesn't notice them at all.

(Oh and joy of joys - Garnett Silks "What Do You Say" Greensleeves 12" for £4 :D )

may be you have to blame your friend for not burning properly?

anyway it's the music that matters, not the artefact it's copied on

Tip: Try polishing and buffing out your scartchy cds with toothpaste. Dont ask me how or why but it seems to work

nanny: toothpaste is a mild abrasive and when used to polish the bottom clear surface of a (lightly) scratched cd will tend to smooth out the scratches so the light from the laser reading the disk will not refract/reflect in the scratches and will be more likely to get a clean read.
actually what you are doing is relieving the non scratched surface down to the level of the scratch and thereby making the surface "smooth" again; though if the scratch is very deep (like one you can feel with a fingernail) youre going to be doing an awful lot of polishing to get the desired effect.

if youre talking about cdr's and the scratches are on the top not bottom surface, theres nothing one can do. but if it is only light scratching on the bottom surface a light polishing compound (like common toothpase) can often "save" an otherwise worthless disk.
