Questions about two LPs (Barry Brown / Jimmy Riley)

Postby wareika » Tue Jan 18, 2005 5:18 pm

Hi

I have this two LPs:
Barry Brown "Stand firm" (Justice / Ja)
Jimmy Riley "Majority Rule For Africa" (Mackossa / US)

There is not that much infos on the cov.
Can anyone tell me when the Barry Brown LP appeared? Is it a Bunny Lee production (as I assume) or a BB prod (as credited on cover)? A very good LP IMO. Better than the

Regaeding the Jimmy Riley LP: Who did produce this LP? Some riddims are familliar and I wonder if these riddims were produced by B Lee. Is there any other J Riley LP worth having (Showcase on BS perhaps?)?

thanx in advance

I think it is more or less the same. There are perhaps some differnces as I'm not sure the Makossa press has the dub of Majority Rule... I'll confirm this point later.

Hi

Sorry for the delay Andre... Here is the track list of the Makossa pressing. There are some differences compared to the Burning Sounds. Title in bold are the one that does not appeared on BS.

A side:
Majority Rule For Africa
Tell The Youths the Truth
Somebody Told Me
I'm Yours You're Mine
Everything's Coming Up Love

B side:
Rise And Work
Love You Madly
Play Play
Gunman Of J.A.
Channel One Crash

It misses the dub to Majority Rules for sure and the tune "Exploitation".

The artistic credits are the same with only Roland Francis (owner of Makossa label) credited as co-producer and exectutive producer.

Last, I don't know if you plan to add Makossa label to your website. They issued some very fine LPs in US... If yes the cat# is :MN 2338 and it was issued in 78

Can someone post a complete list of Makossa releases?
Apart from the Winston Riley set there was also an excellent Prince Mohammed set -No one remember Africa-which has a killer dj cut of the Heptones tune -You want to get I out.

Here are the Makossa release I know. Lots of classics:

Hudson, Keith "Torch Of Freedom" (Makossa / 78)
Clarke, John "Roots Reggae" (Makossa / 78)
Riley, Jimmy "Majority Rule For Africa" (Makossa / 78)
Meditations "Wake Up" (Makossa / 80)
Meditations "Message From" (Makossa / 80)
Prince Muhammed "No One Remember Africa" (Makossa)
Riley, Jimmy "Makossa Records Presents" (Makossa) aka "Showcase" (Burning Sounds)???

There are sometime few differences compared with other pressings. For exemple the Hudson set which is a showcase has the dub version first and the vocal pârt second.

There are certainly a few more.

There's a "Disable Smilies in this post" option you can activate to avoid it:
