Hortense Ellis-Secretly

Postby CC » Sun Jan 16, 2005 8:54 pm

Have just rediscovered this tune (can't believe I ever forgot about it!) and what a tune it is!
Apart from Hortense's and the version by The Uniques (and U Roy- Scandal) on the Matador label anyone know if there are any more recent cuts of this song?

Also what (if any) is the original?
Thankuuuuuuuuuuu

Jimmie Rodgers 1958.

Forget the label at the moment, I'll have a dig.

As for recent versions, the riddim is more commonly known as M16 and was widely used in the dancehall era, the biggest tune being Lone Ranger's M16. Not sure about 90s'/2000s cuts.

Label was Roulette and the tune was number 3 in the US charts that year.

What a beautiful version!

Some others on the rhythm

Born To Lose - Joy & Lloyd - Matador (UK)
Scandal - U Roy - Matador (UK)
Secretly - The (other) Uniques - Matatdor (UK)
King & Queen - Yellowman & Sister Nancy - AMCO (JA)
Rough Old Life - Sugar Minott - Soljie (JA)

(the three on Matador are all on a killer 10")

Hmmmm.. I can corrolate the M16 riddim with the tunes by The Uniques and the U Roy etc.. but it doesn't ring true with Hortense's cut. Diff' tempo and it's a diff' b-line :?

Yep, the Hortense cut was recorded at Studio 1 much later than the original Uniques cut. The original, produced by Lloyd "The Matador" Daley, is the cut that all the 80s recuts are on.

Just found my copy of the Jimmie Rodgers tune as well :D

The Jimmie F. Rodgers version is available on EMI's 'Original Jamaican Sound System' from a couple of years back.
