Calling Two Tone experts

Postby Maarty » Fri Jan 14, 2005 2:00 am

I was given a Two Tone 7",

A
Roddy Radiation & The Specials, (feat Paul Heskett on sax),
Braggin & Tryin Not To Lie

B
Neville Strapes, aka Judge Roughneck,
Rude Boys Outa Jail (version)

Original 2 tone label and sleeve, matrix TT999A1-A2 (1980). It say it's a free single, not for sale.

Any info on this one? I can't find it on my discography.

Respect Maarty

A: Braggin' & tryin' not to lie - Roddy 'Radiation' Byers
- Is a Rock 'n' Roll track. Paul Heskett was the sax player from Jerry Dammers' girlfriend (Val's) band, The Swinging Cats (who had a 2 Tone 7", 'Away' b/w 'Mantovani'.

B: Rude boys outa jail - act. Neville Staples in his Judge Dread persona, Judge Roughneck. The song is a sprawling, rambling version of the tune on 'More Specials', itself a re-working of The Clarendonians' 1966 Ska song, 'Rude boy gone jail'.

As mentioned, it was a freebie, given away with The Specials second LP, and is worth about a fiver in Mint condition.

The rarest 2 Tone 7" is the one by Elvis Costello that was withdrawn & handed out at gigs (TTL7, the cat. no. which was later re-used for the chart-topping Special AKA live EP).

How much is the Costello one worth Charlie.
Also Gangsters by the Specials with the plain white stamped sleeve?

By the way big thanks for the cdr - it came today, I'll be listening tonight.

It's something I mentioned once before on the old forum, but many years ago at a record fair I saw a UK pressing of "Gangsters" on 2 Tone but on see-thru green vinyl (I think... it might possibly have been red, the old memory's playing tricks on me nowadays...) - any one seen or heard or know anything about this one?

BTW: If you're looking to pick up a copy of the Costello CHSTT7, watch out! There exists a more common second pressing, which looks exactly like a kosher original one, and is more likely the one to have been given out at gigs, but it has a different matrix number, with an additional XX1 in the run-out groove. This is the one you're most likely to find - 13000 were pressed!

i thought that came with the first 1000 not 100,000 copies of "more specials". i sold mine some years ago for 50 USD so i kind of doubt the 5 pound quote, but maybe thats all it fetches in the UK.

I think the 100,000 figure is correct, JB.

I've seen them sell on eBay for about £10, so I put my spare on there a few months ago and got £1 for it - hmmmm...

Both of those songs ("Braggin" and "Rude Boy Outa Jail") are available (unlisted) on the UK CD version of More Specials. Or at least they were; I picked it up years ago and since the tunes weren't listed on the CD sleeve I had no idea what they were until they invented the internet and I found an online discography. That Judge Roughneck version is one of the most berserk things ever committed to record, IMO.
They have used guns to spoil the fun and force tasteless music upon the land. (Prince Buster)

huh...100,000 is correct? seems like a lot. the copy of the lp with the sticker saying bonus record that i bought was the only one i ever saw, but i guess they must have stayed in the uk and europe (it was a uk pressing but those regularly got imported to the states back then).

anyway i defer to you guys on that one.

i would like to pick up another copy for 1 pound though, thats for sure.

and didnt know it was on the cd reissue, might have to go out and buy that then...ive still only got the original uk LP and then various compilations on cd. i really like that "rude boys out of jail" cut.

I've seen "Sea Cruise" go for £15 - I think it was the lowest selling 2 Tone single. I love it though - fair rolls along!
