Harry apologises for Nazi uniform
Jan 13, 2005
A photograph of Prince Harry with a swastika on his arm is the latest in a succession of blows to the young royal's increasingly battered reputation.
While his older brother William has grown in stature since emerging from the shadow of their late mother Diana, Harry has become known as the playboy prince.
He has given his critics plenty of ammunition, from smoking cannabis as a teenager to his more recent nightclub scuffle with a paparazzi photographer.
There have been attempts to present a different side of the third in line to the throne, such as his recent photocall with William following the Asian tsunami.
The pair joined volunteers at a warehouse to pack aid for the blighted region and admitted they wept when they watched a TV documentary about the disaster.
Harry, who is now 20, has also been involved in rugby union coaching with schoolchildren.
A gap year visit to Lesotho where he worked with children afflicted by Aids was similarly seen as a successful attempt to clean up his image.
He recorded a documentary about his time there in which he spoke at length about how he was determined to follow in Diana's footsteps through charity work.
Soon afterwards he was embroiled in controversy when his former Eton art teacher claimed she helped him pass. Clarence House described the allegations by sacked tutor Sarah Forsyth as "incredibly unfair".
Just a week later, Harry was pictured brawling with a photographer outside the Pangaea nightclub in central London.
Royal spokesman Paddy Harverson said the Prince would not apologise for his behaviour and no criminal action resulted.
However it later emerged that a decision to caution him was overruled by a senior manager at the Crown Prosecution Service as "not in the public interest".
Harry is now set for a respectable career in the military and had been due to begin his officer training at Sandhurst in January. That plan suffered a setback recently when it emerged that a rugby injury meant his entry was delayed until May.
It came soon after he returned from a visit to Argentina amid reports of a plot to kidnap him.
His first serious negative publicity came three years ago when he was involved in under-age drinking and taking soft drugs.
It prompted his father the Prince of Wales to send him on a visit to a drugs rehabilitation clinic to see the long-term effects of narcotics.
During his school days, Harry was relatively sheltered from exposure to the media, partly thanks to the protection of his mother.
Through an informal agreement struck in the wake of her death, the media left Harry and William alone while they finished their education.
