It seems several tracks on this Soul Jazz release are not long discomixes! Can anyone please list the track lengths for all the titles on this compilation?

thats a bit stupid isnt it? or is there a reason for this?
maybe its something like a "discomix and friends" album where there are
6 discomixes and some contributions from other (smaller) formats and friends of the 12"

The only reason I can imagine is that they were overdubbed and re-issued as 'discomixes' despite not adhering to the ideas about length..........

Discomix is a partially at least a marketing concept for Soul Jazz. Studio One Funk wasn't all funk either. They also call themselves a Sound System which they're not.

do the people who compile these releases actually own the music ..meaning do they come from their collection?? or do they have other people compiling / helping them... do they know about the music they put out? or pay someone who does to do the job for them under soul jazz' name? i dont know how this company works.. and i own very little of their releases (1) mainly because i always think of them as the 100, 200% etc dynamite people.. and unfortunately that put me off in a way(well.. they werent really aimed at "Reggae people"so i guesss thats why!) ... even though i know theyve released good stuff.. which i would have never heard before if it werent for them.. e.g some things from the roots comp etc..if they had bsides as well id get more from them...

something i think thats not necessary too is their limited edition 12"s which dont have anything different from the LP versions (from the ones ive seen...no bonus tracks/dubs if im not mistaken?) itd be okay if someone didnt want to get the whole LP and just wanted 1 or 2 tracks if he liked the 12"...

I think you're being a bit harsh Eph....they were in touch with Dodd personally until recently and sifted through a lot of stuff with him apparently, presumably off vinyl mostly - I think ALL their S1 releases are worthwhile to excellent. I also liked their Randy's and Joe Gibbs releases.

meaning.. are the people who released the "capoeira" compilation the same people that did the reggae or do they have people compiling and supplying the music for them for each release kindathing..

that was just cos they have stuff from maybe 50 different types of music thats all..and i was wondering if its like 2 people or 5 people who work for SJ and rerelease things from their collection etc etc... or if 100 people contribute for different releases... if you get what i mean...

I can't figure why they decided to call this one Discomix. Studio 1 music can stand on it's own right without Soul Jazz marketing it as something it is not - over half this selection is not discomix as we understand it (ie: 12" or 10" extended).

a lot of these tracks were played in reggae discos back in the days.

so they called it a "disco mix" CD.

It's as Tim tells it above, if the SoulJazz lot are one thing it's that they know their market and what will sell.....I'm waiting for the S1 'dubplate' series to hit the shops at some point.
You can't knock the quality of the releases for the most part as Moses says, especially if you're unlikely to get hold of the originals.
There's plenty on discomix to keep me interested also (the Ethiopian run on Throw me corn in particualr) and quite a bit I've got already - so it goes with much of reggae that's re-released. That said, it's certainly not their best disc.
I think there's a crew of people around the Souljazz shop, etc. who have different tastes musically and recommend niche stuff for release that will spark sales interest. The 'sound system' is mostly reggae driven though, with a spot of funk, etc,

2 girls/ladies (one black (deejay?) one white (selector?) (called abi i think) have played in athens maybe 4 times already?? dunno.. quite a few times anyway.. and they have something to do with souljazz (i think the poster said souljazz soundsystem or something... the night is called 100% dynamite i think.. ive never been to see them though.. even though i should have considering the very very small number of 'events' related to the music i love in this country. i guess you landoners would know who these ladies are!

I may have to go and check 100% Dynamite in London again soon - I haven't been for years. Does anyone know if they still get the big queues outside?

Epht you mmay as well go and check them if they're the only show in town - don't expect a night of Lacksley Castell & Barry Brown though...
