The Studio One drummers

Postby Chocolate Soldier » Sat Jan 08, 2005 2:06 pm

On the old forum you groovy cats supplied me with the info as to who the Studio One drummers were, unfortunately I didn't copy the info at the time & now those archives are gone..If you could fill me in as to the players again that'd be GREAT..thank you people..
I am finally going to finish a little article on some reggae & dub releases from a drumming perspective - in a drumming magazine, (surprise!)..maybe it'll help sell a few more copies of this music we know & love to some new souls..
Thanx!

Fil Callender (later on he played guitar in In Crowd band) is the guy drumming on most of the so called foundation tunes like Real Rock... if we believe what the trombone player Vin Gordon reminisces that is. I remember there was a thread about those foundation players but I can't find it now.

My suggested timeline for those drummers post-Skatalites is Joe Isaacs (Soul Brothers, Soul Vendors, music right after ska, and rock steady), then Fil Callender in Sound Dimension era, then Horsemouth and Vin Morgan of the Soul Defenders and whoever was playing with the Gladiators Band, then Freddie McGregor filling up sessions when none of those other luminaries were available (from mid 70's or so), and finally Cleveland Browne playing mostly overdubs in the early 80's and Horsemouth alternating with him every now and then. Vin Morgan has also been playing drums until now as the leader of the Morganairs.

Didn't Joseph Hill play drums on some of those Soul Defenders tunes?

Who said Vin Gordon played drums? No one, at least not I. You have to read more carefully. Vin MORGAN was the name. He was the drummer for the Soul Defenders band, which was the one time backing band for Freddie McKay, hailed somewhere from the country side.

Same Clevie.
